If I recycle bottles, do I keep the lid on when I put them in the bin?

My family has decided to give back to the environment... so we started recycling. Earlier, I was washing out a Dr. Pepper bottle and as I was putting the top back on before I threw it into the bin and I wondered. So is there a "rule"? Or it doesn't matter? Thanks!

yes i do. i put the bottle cap together with the bottle. for me if i leave the bottle uncovered it will be attracting insects like ants and cockroach. so i always make sure that i put the cap of the bottle together with the bottle. i dont think there is a rule to that but i made it a habit ti put the cap

We do not leave the lids on. They tend to cause problems in the machines that crush them. I don't know that there is an actual rule but my advice is to leave the lids off.

First of all, it's a great thing what you guys are doing. I'm the only person at home who likes to recycle our trash. My brothers and my dad are just too lazy so they throw away everything! Ugh! I think if the lid is the metal kind then you can remove it before throwing the bottle itself. We call it a tansan here but I don't know what it's really called.
