Damaged cheque is it valid?

October 28, 2008 7:32am CST
I sold an item on ebay and the buyer paid by cheque. I got it today but i put it on the talbe and went into the kitchen. When i came back through i noticed my young son has drawn over it. It is still readable but is it invalid now that he has drawn on it. Thanks for any help.

well, it depends on how the drawings were made. if it didn't affect the primary details of the check such as the payee name, amount (both figures and words), date, and authorized signature, i think it can still be acceptable by the bank. but if there are alot of scribbles which may make the check look odd, i think you better consult your bank representative.

I think your problem might have been resolved by now. I hope you might have got your payment, as I think, the cheque would have been encashed after talking to the bank.

it should be ok, but i would call your bank, explain the situation and see what they have to say about it. i know with money, all they do is tape it back up and its good to go.

It acually depends on where her drew or how much your son drew on it. It would also depend if you would deposit it to your account for clearing or as an on-us cheque or encash it. But i think it would be easier of you would deposit it as on-us or encash it because when you reach the teller in the bank she could try to verify the cheque through phone immediately if it is ok for the maker of the cheque. But if you would deposit it for cleaing it would take you days before you would know if your cheque is still negotiable. I think i would prefer encashing it or depositing it as on-us so that i would know immediately if it is still negotiable.
