Do we really need Vista?

So I got a new computer and it had Windows vista pre-installed. I am trying to get used to it and it looks like a good OS to me, but I got this question. Do we really need a new OS? I mean really, we were just fine with Windows XP and it took me some time to get used to it. Now we have Windows Vista which looks nice and has a few good features, that XP doesn't (like Direct X 10,etc.) but do we really need a new OS every few years? Microsoft is already working on Windows 7 and it looks just like Vista to me with a different look on it. I do understand that Microsoft wants money but do the consumers need the OS? I mean, there are a lot of people still using Windows XP and maybe even Windows 2000 or some other OS and it doesn't look like the people would need a new OS. Many people I know use the computer only to do their work and they can do it on basically any OS. For example XP, so there is no reason for them to even think about getting Vista unless they feel like having this shiny new OS. I know that there are people who might need Vista but those people will only need it because of the new features, like previously mentioned, Direct X 10. I as a Gamer will have to upgrade sooner or later to Vista as my main OS because more and more Games will start to use DirectX 10 so I am practically forced to switch to Vista, but what about the other people or for example, schools? They don't really need to switch to Vista but in they end they probably will end up switching to Vista anyway because it will become the new standard just like Windows XP did a few years ago. So back to the topic, do we really need Vista? I myself would have said no if you would have asked me a few years ago but since I know that there are things Vista has and XP doesn't I am practically forced to say yes now. :(

I am with you, my techy wants me to upgrade but I am sticking with XP, I think I have too many very old programs that i use all the time that just may nit work with vista..I think michrosoft could have brought it out as an option only or just improved features to be added to XP....I don't think it is fair to keep changing.
