Strep-throat, Mono...How much more

does my little girl have to endure before the doctors figure out whats wrong with her. My girl is 5 years old and in the last 2 weeks she has had strep-throat, Mono, foliculitus, chronic cysts and warts all over her, and now boils. The doctors keep giving her antibiotics that are not doing anything to help and now she has developed an allergy to penicillian products which limits what they can give her. They tell me that her immune system is weakened and that there is an underlying source but they can not determine what it is without eliminating all the "symptoms" first. So now she is taking prednisone to supress her bodies reactions to all of these so they can see what shows up. This just sounds dangerous to me, seeing as how they are squashing her ability to fight off any infections she maycome across in the meantime. Has anybody had something like this go on with a child? Does the fact that Lupus and Hodgkins runs in the family mean I need to worry?

Leahsfrog, I am so sorry to hear that your little girl is going through all of this. It must be a living hell for her and a nightmare for you. My heart goes out to you both and you are absolutely in my prayers tonight! I don't know anything about Lupus or Hodgkins. Is there a large university or teaching hopital near where you live? My daughter suffered for weeks with what the doctors thought were some sort of neurological problems: back pain, shooting pain down her legs, left knee giving out when she walked. She would scream, "Mommy make it stop." Her doctor made an appointmet with a pediatric neurologist at All Children's Hospital in Tampa, but I couldn't stand it any more and took her to Shands at UF in Gainesville. Up until that night she had been to the ER twice, admitted once, seen her doctor and in all, 8 doctors. That night at Shands 3 pediatricians saw her and a host of residents and students. Turns out she had a very bad kidney infection, which can often mimic neurological problems. The doctor was going to discharge us when she suddenly changed her mind and ordered another urinalysis. She said if we had waited 2 more weeks to go to Tampa, my child would have had permanent kidney damage. There was just something about her symptoms that didn't add up to this one doctor. Stay stong and keep fghting for your baby! Please keep us posted and let us know what happens! My thoughts and prayers are with you both!!

Thank you, all prayers are treasured at this point. The closest Hospital like that is 6 hours away and at the moment we are pretty much stuck waiting for her doctors to decide what to do. We have 5 other children as well and none of them are getting sick like this, I just feel so awful watching her suffer. Everytime they draw blood I have to hold her down and listen to her confused screams. I worry that maybe she has Hodgkins which is a cancer of lymph nodes because her symptoms are close to what my niece went through before she was diagnosed. On the other hand it also closely matches the symptoms my granmother has with Lupus. Then I start hating myself because I went through two complete weeks of radiation when I was mewly pregnant with her before the doctors realised I was pregnant.

If you didn't know you were pregnant, then you didn't know. Don't beat yourself up over it. Have the doctors said that this could be a problem? I'm sure it's not!! I just feel so terrible for you! I wish I could come over and give you a big, giant hug!! Consider yourself hugged, Leahsfrog! Please keep us posted. I will check back often. In the meantime, if you don't want to wait for her doctor, then take her. I'm sure your mother, sister, aunt, neighbor, someone would hold down the fort for you. All my best!!

Aww, thank you for the hugs. Still nothing new, we are still waiting for the biopsy results of the lump from her underarm. I took the next 2 weeks off of work just in case we need to take her somewhere else or whatever may happen.
