I feel that formatting your harddisk is one of the most useful computer skills one can have. I had to do this several times and was glad I know how to do it so that I don't have to bring it to the computer shop. How about you guys?

In the last 12 months on average i think i formatted my hard disk once every 3 weeks...some kind of problem comes everytime so it ends up getting formatted. I have two hard disks in my computer so i keep only the OS in one hard so i won't loose any datas which are important when i format.

Even if you are having only one hard disk also, there wont be any problem, if it is properly partitioned. When you are installing the hard disk into two or more partitions and install OS in the primary partition. So next time when you are formating select only the proper partition. It wont affect the other partitions.

Some of the reasons why someone would want to reformat their computer so many times is if they clutter it up too much, they want to change the operating system, there is some kind of major problems with programs and the only way to fix it is reformatting, a virus or something along that line. It's just a way to give the computer a clean slate. It basically wipes out everything. Then you have to go through the process of reinstalling the operating system and other features from scratch. It's not something I'd want to do on a regular basis. It takes a long time and if you don't know what you're doing, you can mess up your computer. I somewhat fall in that category. I tried reformatting on my own once and it didn't turn out to good. I had to get my little brother to help me out. So, I've learned to leave things like that to my little brother.

Yes I know how to format my computer and I also do this for a living. I can also do other computer troubleshooting and repair. I also know how to assemble a computer. I learned this skill through my friend and I was able to enhance my skill through experience. Before we have a computer shop and I do the maintenance work. I am thankful that I have learned this skill because it saves a lot of money.

Well, for starters Windows XP is one of the easiest OS that can help you format your computer so no problem with that. Other than that, I learned how to do that without help from my course. It's a great help really...
