As bubblyapple says, it depends on your nationality and the nature of your visit. You can apply for a Electonic travel authority (ETA) on the Internet if you are from a qualifying nationality, easy to do I did this last year. You are eligible if you hold a Malaysian passport. If you are just visiting as a tourist then the visitor ETA is valid for visits not exceeding 3 months and valid is for 12 months from issue. It costs AUD $20 and you will normally get a pretty much instant acceptance. There is no paper visa or stamp needed in your passport, when you check in for your flight the airlines systems will know you have the visa. Heres the website to apply www.eta.immi.gov.au

It would depend on what your citizenship is. If you're an American or selected European countries, even if you are coming from Malaysia, you don't have to get a VISA to enter Australia. However, if you are going to stay in Australia for more that 90 days, you have to get a VISA no matter what your citizenship is. If you are a citizen of a country that has no VISA agreement with Australia, then you have to get a VISA whether you are staying for a short or long time in their country.
