Depends really on the kind of ice cream. There is soft serve that is very popular nowadays. They say it is not as fattening as the regular ice creams. I think I saw some low calorie or light ice cream sold somewhere. Check out the big supermarkets.

Anything in moderation is fine. Even when on a diet it is possible to go out and have 1 scoop of ice cream once in a while without ruining your diet. It's when you go overboard and order something like a Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor pigs trough that it's a problem. A pigs trough has 6 huge scoops of ice cream, nuts, 2 bananas, whipped cream and 3 containers of hot fudge. It is good, but probably has 2 days worth of calories. I ordered it once as a teenager and got a ribbon for eating the whole thing. I would never even try anything like that now, but teens can get away with it. Now I feel like a pig when I order a 2 scoop sundae.

It is all about common sense when it comes to any kind of food like this. Eat TOO MUCH and it is bad for you but emphasise in the "too much." A little ice cream now and again as long as you follow a generally healthy diet and do some exercise is not going to make you fat. You could try sorbet or Ben and Jerrys do a low fat frozen yogurt.
