no mystry, it's really a highly tropical area. In tropical areas like that, weather can get very WEIRD because of the way weather fronts come together. Insurence companies have also studied the area and found that there are no more incidents of ship/plane problems there then in similar sized and trafficed areas of the ocean.

I'm not sure. It probably has something to do with all the planes and ships that have gone missing there.
