I think you will need to think about what kind of cameras that you are looking for. 1) Compact Digital Camera 2) Digital Single Reflex Len (DSLR) 3) Digital Medium Format If you are looking for compact camera and looking forward to flexible controls. I would recommend Fuji F series or Canon Powershot. These cameras are packed with controls like Aperature, Shutter, High ISO with lower noise. If you are learning photography, do look out for cameras with Aperature Priority (Ap) and Shutter Priority (Sp). Users will get to control one aspect while the camera controls the other automatically. If you are looking for a better grip and a slightly larger body and weight without the need to change lens. You can look at semi-pro cameras. Fuji have a few of them in their S series. If you are looking for maximum control and what you see is what you get(WYSIWYG). Then I think DSLR is the choice for ya. Among all manufacturers, Canon and Nikon are by far the leaders in the market offerring a wide range of DSLRs for different consumer group. DSLRs are generally classified into 3 categories; Entry level,Advance,Professional series. Other than controls, you can play with lens, filters, studio set up with flash sync, remote shutter release, raw images for editing purposes etc... Hope that the above brief summary helps...happy MyLotting...

It is an impossible task: too many unknowns. However, betterphoto.com has an on-line application (2 actually) that let you tick a series of boxes that narrow down the choice to the camera most likely to meet your needs. Have a look and let us know what you decide on.
