working for yourself

I was just wondering how many of you are working for yourself or are trying to make that transition. I am so sick of working 15 hour shifts and being the best only to be taken advantage of. I put my all in it so I can get the raise when it's time. I work over time to pay bills and to also help my bosses...but they all appear the same. I worked at the dollar tree and the district manager was to come in and inspect the store. Each of us assigned an aisle to work on. My aisle was only one that the district manager approved...even out of the store manager's aisle. I didn't even get a thank you, I got more work put on me and then treated worse than the lazy women did...that's only the beginning. I'm fed up with it so I have decided to try to work for myself with in the next 5 years (realisticly). I thought since I make my own chocolates and baked goods I might start with that first and then expand into other areas like coffee drinks (that are not easy to find and my own recipes). Feel free to share about anything on this subjct.

Well I do both. I own my own business plus I have a part time job on the side. My husband and I own a tax and accounting business and we are getting ready to open up a used book store right here in this office as well. The building is big so there won't be any extra overhead or extra bills to pay. I work part time at our local hospital and my department works twelve hour shifts. It doesn't really interfere with our business but this year we are thinking about hiring someone part time to keep an eye on the bookstore and who can help out with taxes when needed so when I do work those twelve hour overnight shifts I can go home and get some rest. I commend you for wanting to go out on your own and starting your own business. It's hard but worth it in the end. You can set your own hours and work at your own pace. The SBA wouldn't help us out (go figure) but I sure do hope they will help you if you decide to apply. We had to get started on our own with our own money. It's ok,tho...we don't have a loan to pay back. Ok..sorry am getting ahead of myself here...I just want to wish you the absolute best in whatever you choose to do.

You and your husband have really come along ways. I know how hard it is when you can't get help. I figure pretty much I will have to do the same as you and your husband have done. I think the up side is no loan payment to owe! I am so use to being told that we don't make enough or too much for getting help. If they seriously think they can stop me, you, or anyone else who wants their own business then they have another thing going because people like me and you will find a way even if it takes a while and is the hardest road to take to get there...it only makes us wiser and stronger! I wish you best of luck on everything and hope it goes smoothly.

I understand. I worked for myself for about a year. I was doing infant and toddler/children's photography. But, the business just wasn't there like I needed to stay in business. I am currently working on a janitorial crew, getting ready to start a home health aide position part time to supplement until christmas time, but, am also working on new business plans. Try to aim for something that there is a need for. Something there is DEMAND for. And right now, thats a hard call, with the economy the way it is. This may not be the best time to start a business.....although, Im looking into possibly a second hand store. A thrift shop. Because business has been booming for them, because people just can't afford to buy all new anymore. Good luck!

I totally agree with you. I get alot of people (even before this money mess) that said they can't afford to keep buying from these businesses and want to go to thrift stores. I have put thought into that idea as well. That's another reason I would like to give myself 5 years. I want to be sure and test it too. Right now is tricky to find a demanding area. You hit it right on the money and I respect you for still trying no matter what...keep it up!!!
