How can one find out if a site is a scam?

I don't know how to find out if a site is a scam because I am new in this internet business. How could one find out if the site she is using is a scam? I know that there are all kinds of scams online and I am afraid to be a victim. I still don't know how to distinguish between a legit site and a scam. All I know is that there are millions of sites online offering how to make money online. some are too good to be true. There are sites that tell registrants that they could earn a substantial amount in just a day or an hour. There are also sites that asks for a minimal starting fee. I'm so confused about this internet business that I cannot focus on one site.
