no pay for training

I wonder if anyone else has gone thru what I went thru yesterday? I applied for a waitstaff position at an italian restaurant, I was told to come back the following day for 3 days of training. I arrived 15 minutes in advance, followed my trainer the whole shift, asked all the appropriate questions etc. etc. At the end of the evening I asked what time they would like me in the following day. The owners daughter(family owned & operated)replied, "well, leave your number, I have many people training in the coming days and I will make a decision in a few days, we'll call you" I was under the assumption I had a job! I filled out no paperwork, punched no time clock, so I'm sure I won't be paid for the 7 hours I ran around. I'm sure this is not legal, however, they probably know their isn't much you can do about it. Is this something that happens only in the restaurant business? Or is this a new way for companies to get free help? Please share any similiar stories or advice.

Just with your local labor board, I do not think this is legal. This was your time spent and they didn't make it clear. You may at least get paid for the time you were there. I would also call it in to your local newspaper so that other people don't have it happen to them.

The newspaper aspect might be an option, if I don't recieve a call, but in a fairly small town, you'd be surprised at how quickly word gets around in the restaurant community. I can't afford to be labeled a troublemaker when I'm trying to find work. I am going to call them back in a day or two, and ask them if I get paid for my training, assuming I don't have the position. You know I've been in this business for about 25 years, and this happened 2 times before, both times at italian restaurants. I wonder if it's common practice in italy?
