What would you do if...

This question is based on what happened to me once. =P You're at a hotel. Suddenly, you notice some money on the floor and pick it up. You realize that it's a *huge* amount of money and the person that lost it must be looking for it. Do you keep the money for yourself, or do you turn it in to the reception? I'd return it. =P I don't know why, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable keeping a large amount of money, even if I found it fair and square. It's not the fact that it belongs to someone and they lost it, it's just that I probably wouldn't be able to enjoy the money if I knew if I had found it only by luck. I did return a large amount of money once (the person didn't give me anything for finding it though, which sucks xD) How about you? ^_^

If I were you, I'll give it to reception like you did. I do this way without thanks of them. Because of many reason. One is maybe they didn't know who pick their money for give thanks. Second is the reception didn't tell them about you so they didn't know who. Third is maybe they forget. When you are happy to find your money, you maybe forget the person pick your money. No matter what.

I would return the money to the owner. it pays to be honest. But I wont gie it to the reception. I might ask them to announce it and claim the money for me. The receptionist might just keep it.

That's a very good point, but I stayed there until they gave an announcement and located the right owner. I wouldn't give money, even if it's not mine, to other people I'm not sure I can trust either.

I will do the same, I will give it back to the owner maybe that money is for an important purposes. I've found a wallet when I was in High school and I gave it to the teacher and the teacher found the owner of that wallet. If that wallet is not given back to the owner, she will have no money to use to go home or to buy her lunch or snack.

alas, that loser apparently was so inconsiderate and numb ,from this angle of view . he really lucky at that time, for he lost his belongings at the beginning, and re-gained it afterwards because of your return.and he indeed sucks though ,for he expressed little gratitude to you for the good deeds. well done, you are a conscientious boy.if that day i were the loser ,i would have handed out half of my lost property to thank for your timly return.hehe

That's one way to look at it, I guess, but I've lost things and I can't help appreciating when they've been returned to me. I can't help feeling a little undeserving of the money - anyone could have found it lying around. I agree that people should be more careful with their belongings, especially valuable ones. PS: - I'm a girl. xD

I similar thing happened to me and I decided to give the money to the reception. You feel that returning it has nothing to do with the fact that it's not your money, however, I'd say that's the main reason I did what I did. I didn't work hard for the cash and I really have no right to keep it. I know that if I ever lost a large sum of money I'd be extremely grateful to whoever returned it. Seeing honest people out there is one of those few things that spread a smile upon your face and remain in your heart forever. I'd like to be one of those people that forever leave an impact out of doing the right thing and setting an example for others. P.S - I didn't get a reward either. xD But it doesn't matter since I would have refused one if offered anyways. Just knowing that I was the one who stumbled upon their valuables, rather than somebody who would have grabbed it and run away, is enough to make me a very happy person. ^_^

I agree, and I was only joking around about the reward part. xD What you said about working for the money: that's the main reason why I wouldn't keep it too, and it's what I meant by mentioning luck. =P You work for your money to earn it and spend it; using something you didn't put any effort into getting, I just find wrong. =S

thats a good q, when i got my cell phone stolen i was so upset not that i had lost it but that someone would do that, all i kept saying was if i found it id return it, and money is even worse. so tempting, but its tainted.

That sucks. =/ I lost my cell phone once too (no one stole it from me but I dropped it somewhere). The person that found it fortunately called a number that was stored (my dad's) and told us what he found. My dad dropped his phone once as well, recently. The person that found it returned it, but asked for something in exchange. xD It is tainted to keep money or anything that isn't yours, I agree. =P

in the same situation, i'd definitely return the cash although i'll go to great lengths to make sure about the identity of the owner of the money. i'd inform the hotel about it but i'd never turn over the cash to them. i'd be the one to personally give the money to the rightful owner and before i give the cash, i'd make sure that the person is the true owner of the money. perhaps, i'd ask questions surrounding about the circumstances about how he lost the money. if i'm not satisfied with his answers, i won't return the money. instead, i'd donate all the money to charitable institution under an anonymous donor. just my thoughts. cheers!!!

I would probably return it. It's a very big amount of money and for sure that money is badly needed by the owner. You don't know that the money might be a payment to the hospital to a family needed an operation or maybe he needs the money to pay his debt. So we never know. Better to return it to authorities and I really want to make it sure that the real owner got it.

If the amount of money is quite big then I'm going to return it or hand it to the reception. If the amount is not big then I'm going to keep it.

Good question! I will surely return back to the owner.. I guess i'll be waiting there for a short while, the person might return if she/he found that his/her money is lost. Because i worry that the receptionist will be greedy and do not return back to the owner.. Anyway, you correct to say that: we wont enjoy using people money.. God bless you, dear

I totally agree with you. You had no business keeping that money and you would probably feel guilty about keeping it if you did. I dont know why there are people who would consider it fair not to returns stuff to their owners. Given the fact that the one who found it didnt steal it and that the owner probably deserved to lose it for being careless. But it just would feel right. I respect people who do the right thing even if they did get nothing back for their trouble (I agree that sucks!) Heck! At the end of the day, you are still left with that warm fuzzy feeling that tells you you did something good. And that makes all the difference!

I'd return the money to the receptionist. The person who lost was probably frantic. Maybe there will be a reward or not. My conscience would tell me to return it.

I would have to return it. I wouldn't feel right keeping the money. My money is always tight, and I would be in dire straits if I lost a large amount of cash. I would probably have it planned for something specific - maybe gas on the way home? Anyway, I would assume the other person might be in a similar situation as me, and would not want them to be experiencing hardship. If I didn't get rewarded then, perhaps karma would have a goody in store for me. :)
