If you are talking about the holiday named Thanksgiving that is celebrated in the United States, the origins go back to the early 1600's. A group of settlers called the Pilgrims that came to North America from England had few supplies when they came here and had a rough time feeding themselves. Many were starving and sick but a local Native tribe brought food to them to get them through the winter months. In the spring the Natives taught them what crops to plant and how to raise them and how to catch the local game for meat.
The first Thanksgiving was thought to be in 1621 as a harvest festival. Giving thanks to the Natives and their God for a good harvest. It has been a yearly festival ever since. Today it is a National Holiday to give thanks to able to share food with family and friends and many still see it as a day thank their God for all their blessings.
It is always celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November.
