Do you agree that reading can make you mentally alert?

My father used to be a book worm (before he became bedridden). He sometimes read novels from evening up to 5:00 o'clock in the morning. He used to read everything, that's why he was very well-informed. Now that he is totally bed-riddent and can't talk, his mind is alert and still can recognize people. His being alert mentally probably is the result of his being a wide reader. Do you believe that reading can make one mentally alert?

I have no doubt that reading creates alertness within us..I know if I take a book to read before lying down to sleep at night..I end up more awake then ready to sleep.

I agree... reading can make us mentally alert... because i believe that this activity is like the best exercise for our brain... and like the rest of the parts of our body... if we don't exercise... we tend to become unhealthy and weak... My mother would always see to it that she reads the newspaper at least once a day... and that is because she believes that with her current age... this will make her remember things a lot easier... and make her mind more alert... and that really works...

Yes I do believe that reading keeps you alert mentally. I am sorry to hear about your Father's illness. Since he loved to read before he would probably still enjoy it. You said he was still alert and recognized people. If he cannot read for himself he would probably enjoy someone reading to him. I know my husband enjoyed it when I read to him. After his accident the hours I spent reading to him kept our love alive and drew us even closer together.

I really don't know but what I know is that reading helps sharpen the mind. Maybe being alert is a part of having a sharp mind too. It's good he had red a lot when he still can and maybe he was very happy with it.
