The BBC has reported that Woolworths has collapsed under its debt and is set to go into administration. I think everyone must of heard of Woolworths. I am so sad about this news. I was actually nearly crying. I love this store. What next?

I can remember going to Woolworth's stores ever since I was a little girl. The last one we had here closed....not sure how long ago. They always had good prices there and such a variety of things.

Thank you so much for your reply tyc415. We have a lot of the stores still here in Northern Ireland and they are in shopping centres and are usually busy. I will really miss Woolworths. Like you I got everything in it. I buy all my chocolates there for Christmas. I feel sad and I feel I let them down as I should of shopped there more. Take care.

I am also very disappointed and it's not the only company out there in financial trouble either. I remember Woolworths when I was younger and it was always the first shop I went to to buy things with the money I had recieved from relatives at Christmas or my birthday. Used to love buying toys there....infact they used to do something for everyone or every occasion for that matter. Whenever the new school season was soon approaching my mum used to always take me to Woolworths so I could get my new stationary, school bag, lunch box and school uniform. Seems like so long ago now and the stores over here in England are gradually dying off. It was only earlier this year that the store in my main town centre was bought out and converted into another clothing shop. There's a couple of stores still fairly close by but a good half an hour car journey away. Will miss Woolworths if it goes into liquidation...we can all hope for the best. Unfortunately all these supermarkets which offer the services Woolworths used to are now starting to take over the market and emerge the clear winners by the look of things. It makes me wonder if there can be much more in terms of expansion supermarkets can do nowadays.

Thank you for your reply. It really will be missed by everyone. I still love going there at Christmas. I got a lot of chocolates and things there. The big supermarkets have taken over and it is really sad. I live in a small town and two shops have closed this week. We do not even have a big supermarket here because the small shop owners got one stopped from opening. I am going to support my smaller shops much more. Some actually have good bargins in them. Supermarkets should just stick to selling grocerys. This really is sad and I feel I could of supported them more but it is easier to get everything under one roof in the supermarkets. Take care mentalchick.

Awww yes, Ben Franklin stores. Those were great stores also. I used to go there a whole lot. Soda jerk huh? Do you still make good soda's? We have a pharmacy here that has been around forever and they still have a soda fountain and have the good ice cream for their floats and malts and not that soft serve like most have now.

I was also very saddened by this, we have had a Woolworth in our town for as long as i can remember. Nearly every town i have been in have had a Woolworth. I will miss it very much as they are very reasonable price and you can pick up some great bargains. My dad was telling me that they were selling shares in Woolworth for a pound but that was as long as you were willing to accept the 385 million pound of debt. Apparently MfI is also set to go into administration as well.

Just read what was posted. MFI means that 180,000 will now be out of work. Can you imagine it? The world economy is collapsing and the country that I live in has yet to wake up and smell the coffeee. Tourism is down but our Minister of Tourism is still pontificating that we are going to have a great season. so many countries still have the blinklers on and should be worrying about how the poor are going to survive. We do not have unemployment money where I live. The effecrts are just beginning and their is no plan to dela with it! God help us.

I think I really going to cut down, but then again the shops are depending on us too. What a mess we are in. That is awful that the goverments do not help where you are. This is even worse.

That is sad I always enjoyed Woolworths when I was a kid. I remember they actually did have some nice stuff at reasonable prices. The one where I live closed its doors a long time ago, I thought they'd already gone out of business.

Thank you for your reply fwidman. They where still going strong here in the UK, Northern Ireland and Scotland. They have many stores in the shopping malls and they are always busy. I cannot believe they have gone bust after 99 years. I loved this store. It was my favourite. Even today going there is still exciting for me and I will be sad and I feel I could of shopped there more. We have a big Woolworths here called the BIG W. It is huge and I loved it also.

I remember Woolworth's - back when they were called "dime stores". You could actually buy something for a dime there! It is sad to see the old ones going under. Remember when Montgomery Wards closed - something like 100 years old? An original catalog store beginning! Then I heard Sears stopped their catalog - did they? Like I said, I heard it and I dont' shop Sears. For some odd reason, every Sears I have ever been in - across this country, has this odd smell to them. I assume it is what they use to clean the floors and probably generic to all Sears, but the smell was gross and I just couldnt' stand it so I never go to them. I don't know if they still smell that way, but htere isn't one around me so oh well!

Thank you so much for your reply. I do not think we had a sears here but I was in a few abroad. I do not remember a smell though, but then I smoke and cannot smell the best anyway. There is far too much stores closing at the moment it is sad. Take care coffeebreak

I was reading a book today about the history of holiday traditions. Ornaments was what I was reading and it said that glass ornaments originated in Germany, then England then USA. THe first american made glass ornaments were created by WIlliam DeMuth in NewYork around 1870. IN 1880 Frank W. Woolworth was dvertising and selling Lauscha glass ornaments. Woolworth had opened his first "five cent" store in New YOrk, one year earlier. IN 1910 he had 1,000 retail stores coast to coast. By turn of century he was importing 200,000 glass ornaments... and sold for a dime. Sales from christmas decorations from Woolworth toppled $25 million in in 1900. So thanks to Mr. Woolworth, he made ornaments affordable to all and a Christmas tradition that stands strong today. And now he is going away. Sad, sad, sad.

Thanks for your reply and thanks for all that information on the Christmas decorations also. To think Woolworths helped to start the Christmas ornament tradition by selling them at low prices is really sad. I was hoping someone would step in and save this treasure store but its not looking like it and I feel sad about losing it because of the global crisis. Take care coffeebreak. I am going to buy a few things in Woolworths before it closes for good at Christmas.

Hi Hildas, This is so very sad, tonight on the news that have just annouced that they cannot find anyone to buy it so it looks like 25,000 people will be losing their jobs and it makes everyone feel so insecure. I remember I bought my very for 45rpm single from Woolworths in the village I grew up in. I really feel for all the workers and one of the woman I work with at poresent worked for Woolworths for many years and has a pension with them, she is now worried about this and needs to seek advice as to what to do next. Is any job secure now? Huggles. Ellie :D

I know you think someone would of bought Woolworths over. It really is sad. 25,000 people losing a job in Woolworths is very high. I really hope these people will find other work quickly. I remember buying all my singles in there also when I was growing up. I always bought all my chocolates at Christmas in there also. I hope your friend gets her pension alright but I think they might be ok. I think no job is secure at the moment and I dread to see what next year holds for us all. Take care Ellie.

Thanks for replying Dawn. Yeah I will miss Woolworths. They have a great closing down sale at the moment and I love a bargin, but I feel sad the store will not be there in the new year. A car component factory in my area has just announced closure today in my area. They is four people in my neighbourhood that work there and this is awful for them so near Christmas. You think they could of waited until the new year to announce this. I think by 2010 they are saying that 1 in 10 will be out of work worldwide so this is going to be awful. I dread to see the months ahead.

I remember them very well. The last one that was around here went out of business several years ago. We have had 3 KMart's close and the remaining merged with Sears and now Value City and Steve and Barry's closed Saturday. I know what you mean about it saddening you. I hate to see these places go out and it seems to be getting worse and worse!

My son called me from the U.K. yesterday and told me. I felt sick to my stomach. I think that he said it was being sold for one pound? and now another 30,000 perople who worked for woolworth's will be out of work. This has brought back so many memories. When I was fourteen years of age my Dad had a stroke and could no longer work. I applied for a Saturday job and worked for five hours a day for 7 shillings and six pence. This was my lunch money for school and I would buy socks or something or save for Christmas. The hours that I spent in Woolworth's! The recession is beginning to hit the U.K. in full swing but I believe my son said that people won't be turned out of their houses for not paying their mortgages? Is this right? Thank you for a good posting!

Thank you for your reply. It is really sad about woolworths and sader for you as you worked there once. A lot of people are having it really tough. I have always paid my bills and for the first time in twenty years I had to ask my Mother for help last month. I sold my car to a few weeks ago so we will be ok for a while. My cousin could not pay his mortgage for the first time and he went to court and he got to stay in his house with his children. He has to pay the money back but its not alot. I think we are all going to be hit really hard soon. I watched two shops close in the small town I live this week and the shops are like ghost towns.
