Ciao points - why is it important?

Hello. I am a bit confused about Ciao's points and the counting method. A bit difficult to get at first sight. (Or am I just sleepy, I dont know...) Could you please help me? Does it effects your earnings? If so, how exactly? I know they cannot be converted to money. Some experiences are welcomed. Thank you
