I am inclined to think, you have aske a vey intriguing and really parinent question. I aso convined, there cannot be Indiana without a little thought of the Indian, be they Red Indians or West Indies, or Oriental Indians!

Indiana simply means: land of the Indians...referring to the large number of Indians that were in the state when settlers first arrived. Oddly, there is no common story of how the nickname 'hoosier' came about, the tales are many and varied...fun research to do? I think India got its name from pre-muslin days meaning 'people of the Indus river'?

I don’t know why the names are so similar, but there’s certainly no relation between the two. One theory can be that in the middle ages, explorers were forever trying to find our the golden land called India and hence any place they discovered, they thought of it as India. That’s why native north Americans are called Red Indians, we have the East Indies and the West Indies, too!
