Hi, i was just wondering for christians out there, do you believe that the earth was created in 7 days? Literally? in Sunday School (when i was younger), we were taught that yes, the world was created in 7 days. However, now that i'm older, i begin to wonder, how can it be true when scientists say that the earth is millions of years old. also, someone also told me that when you read the accounts of Genesis, it cannot be taken literally. he went on to explain how on how Genesis was probably written by Moses, and written to cater to children so that when they read it, they would understand it. My friend also made this comment that i believe to make a lot of sense "The Bible is God's word revealed to us, it should not be taken as a science book" - this is for christians who literally believe that God created the earth in 7 days because it says so in the bible. What do you think?

I don't think that every single part in the Bible is to be taken literally either. I think that by saying the Earth was created in "7 days", people back then could easily understand it. Just another way to describe things to people, that's all. I think that there are parts in the Bible that are 100% literal and should be read as such, but parts of it are stories to tell children. I agree with you. And not just that, but God is older than anything.. He's been around forever. Maybe when he created the Earth it was described as 7 days in his time? Haha. Who knows.

Genesis 1 rings of both metaphorical and historical truths. It was probably written down by Moses or the Levitical Priests under Moses. The days of Genesis are not meant to be taken literally--they are symbolic and theological descriptions of God's power and the purpose of Creation. It's interesting when we compare the days of Genesis to each other. They're separated by intervals of three. Day 1: God creates light and separates it from the darkness. Day 4: God creates the luminaries, the sun and the moon to govern the seasons. Day 2: God creates the waters and separates the oceans and the sky. Day 5: God creates the fish to rule the oceans and the birds to rule the sky. Day 3: God creates land and plants Day 6: God creates animals and man to rule the land and the plants. It is a metaphorical passage. But I disagree with your friend's assertion that Moses wrote it for children. Where does he see this? This, I think, probably comes from his "21st Century Sunday School" impression of the lesson. Moses did not author a children's story; he authored a theological story of creation. This does not call into question the historical significance of the passage. Metaphor or myth did not mean what we think it means. It calls into question the extent of the historicity of the passage (meaning, how literally we read it). But it does not call into question the accuracy or historical value of the passage.

With regard to this kind of question would be an endless debate. So, be sure when you post this kind of discussion, you should be cautious and open minded for every opinion that may arise. For me, it isn't really a question of how many days the earth or universe was created rather who may have created it. Your premise is that, "God created the universe in 7 days" because it says so in the bible. Other premise is that, "scientists say that the earth is millions of years old". The premises were no relation at all. One is the length of time when God created the universe and the other is about the scientific length of time the earth exists. I am not a religious person, besides am still in search of it. However, my belief that a super being exists and He has created everything is no doubt. Why? Because science may say that the earth is millions years old, but it cannot explain howw it was created and when it began. Truly, what the Bible says should not be taken literally. It is by FAITH that a SUPERNATURAL BEING created this universe including you and me.

i understand what you are trying to say. maybe i didn't explain myself fully. the reason why i drew a link was because scientists say the earth is millions of years old. but according to the bible (if you were to put down a date), the earth can only be a few thousand years old, which is way off from what scientist predict.

The story of the creation in Genesis was taken from an older (2000 year older) story of the Sumerians. And no, I do not believe it was 7 literal days, this is a metaphor of steps God used to create not the earth, but life on the earth, If you read earth was not created on day one, it was created in the begging, no time period between the beginning and the "first day", it could have been 14 billion years ago.

When I was younger, I had no doubts that God created the earth in six days and rested on the seventh. I still believe nothing is impossible for God, so He could have done it; but I'm not as confident that He did. I say that because I don't know when "time" began. When it says that a particular thing was created on a particular day, that might mean when God started to create and when He finished equals a day, but that might not be the same as we understand a day. His day to create the world might add up to several million years based on our understanding of time. For God a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like a day. The bottom line for me is that it doesn't matter. I'm confident He created it. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

Sometimes it seem difficult for we human to understand these things, because we don't even have a fraction of power compare to God...but then if nuclear bombs can bring down cities in minutes, then it makes sense to believe that the world was created in 6 days.

true. i have no problem with God being able to create the earth in 6 days. He could do anything He wants because he is God. i only wonder how we should view creation in the light of all the scientists telling us that the world was create millions of years ago

I was discussing the topic with one of my friends today and he put a new meaning into it,although I don't know if it makes much sense...He said days in the sight of God might be several years to us human.

No one was there to count so how do we know? Does it matter? It appears there are only two explanations for why the universe is here - which sounds more plausible? 1) In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded 2) In the beginning there was nothing and somebody/bodies/God created the universe. I think there must be a third option, but otherwise I have to go for the second option as the least absurd of the two!

Hi, I am a born again christian & I beleive every word of the Bible to be true. God created everything in 6 days & rested on the 7th day (Genesis 1: 31 & Genesis 2: 2. In 2 Peter 3: 8 it tells us that time in heaven unmeasurable. It does not matter if it took 6 days or 60,000 days. The point is that God spoke everything into existence. We cannot imagine the power of God. We accept the Bible by faith.

Jello jedimind, I think it was in the movie To Kill A Mocking Bird where this exact question was explored. I could be wrong on the title but it was a black and white movie....and it was in a court room where they were saying that a day for god may have been a few million of our earth years, but to god, it was a day. Happy MyLotting!

yup, a verse in the bible that would support this idea can be found in 2 Peter 3:8 where it says that one day to the Lord is like a thousand years.

christians believe that the earth was created in 7 days because it was written in Genesis. I believe that God has no problem creating the earth in 7 days because He is God, anything is possible for Him. however, i just think that from the account in Genesis, we cannot be narrow-minded and say just because the bible said 7, it really meant 7 days. instead, we should consider the fact that in the light of what scientists tell us, they could be right as well.

I personally am for the idea that a day for us is not the same as a day for God. I think that the Bible is a very beautiful account of true history, written with all the right mix of drama and enchantment that people during those earlier times needed so that they would believe. Take for example, the creation of man. Genesis says that God used dust as the raw material for His masterpiece. Now, consider the context of drama and enchantment as the backdrop for this particular part of creation. The dust could represent the simplest, singe-celled organism that we evolved from. And the total time that it took for this evolution to happen? Well Genesis says it took God a day. And what is one of God's days for us? Millions of years. Everything makes sense, really. I think the Bible and science support each other. It all depends on how we understand and interpret what we read. If we are open-minded enough, then things start falling into their proper place.

From what I heard, "7 days" is a metaphor so that the people could relate to it, back in the time of Jesus saying "The Earth was formed over millions of years" would surely confuse some people.

i believe that the earth was created in six days, but i also believe in the big bang, when they say the earth is 5-6,000 years old i believe they mean like modern life society, while the big bang i believe it did happen so god did create the earth and everything in six days, but basically either way if it did happen god wanted it to happen that way.so it depends on what you belive, the best way is to sort of combine science facts w/ your belief some way or another

I do believe, however, remember that one day to us is a thousand to the Lord, so the scientists estimation about the time factor probably is right chronologically. Remember the lord gave us different talents, so it is logical to say that the scientists studies may very well be right. But I repeat I do believe God made the earth.

well in my Opinion, the higher being we refer to as god who we may refer to as a creator, is simply beyond our imagination and understanding. Well if God created the earth in seven days then it must have been just that. But our logical minds could not possibly fathom such an act. But then again do we really have to understand everything in this universe? XD

Hi jedi, Yes, I believe that the earth was created within 6 days time and God rested on the 7th day. The Bible tells us so.I believe in every words written in the Bible. Its true that the Bible is not a scientific book: However, when it does make scientific statements, they are stunning in their accuracy. These biblical statements are thousand of years in advance of the scientific knowledge present in the day when the writers penned the words of the Holy Scriptures. The psalmist David wrote "That I may publish with the voice of Thanksgiving, and tell of the wondrous works(Psalm 26:7) As you consider God`s "wondrous works" and astonishing level of scientific knowledge from the Bible. Ask yourselve a question: How could the writers of the Scriptures possibly know these facts unless they were supernaturally inspired by God? Throughout the Word of God are statements whichcan now be tested as to their accuracy due to incredible advances in scientific knowledge in the last few decades. The book Genesis describes the supernatural creation of man in these words,"and The Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostril the breath of life. and man became a living being"(Genesis 2:7) For many years scientist laughed at the apparent simplicity of the scriptural account that God used "the dust of the ground" to construct the complex elements and molecules that make up a human being. However, after a century of scientific examination of the elements within the human body, scientists have been startled to discover that clay and earth contain every single element found in human body. A Reader`s Digest Article in November 1982, described a fascinating discovery by the researchers at NASA`s Ames Research Center which confirmed body exists within the soil. These just prood the accuracy of the Bible. Happy mylotting
