Batman, Turkey

Ok, so the title does not make sense to you. Apparently, there is a city in Turkey (yup, that would be the country) called Batman and their Mayor, Huseyin Kalkan is suing Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan for royalties from the movie The Dark Knight and then some. In an interview from variety.com, the Mayor was quoted saying "There is only one Batman in the world. The American producers used the name of our city without informing us." The Mayor even blames the franchise for unresolved crimes in the city. I'm thinking, perhaps the Joker and possibly the Penguin have decided to move there in search of Bruce Wayne although I doubt there are fans moving toward the Middle East organizing fan clubs. I guess being popular has its entertaining downside. I'm grabbing my popcorn and I'll see how this one unfolds.

That sounds about ridiculous to me, sounds like the world really is sue happy....I think I saw that on the news tonight....hm.....sad... Batman?! Of all things....he's a comic book hero, with a cape. There is Cat Woman, I do not believe there is a city called Catwoman so I really cannot fathom that this would ever hold up in court. Regardless of the city's name, it is beyond me how a mayor could sincerely believe Hollywood is to blame for the lack of law enforcement in his city......... Maybe it has to do with the people that live there?

I agree it sounds ridiculous. Something as popular as the franchise and which has been in existence since before most of us here in MyLot were born, you wonder, "Why only now?" And I didn't know that you are never allowed to use the name of a city without permission. Should anyone sue Shakespeare's estate for naming one of his characters "Paris?"
