I was just wondering if i could get some suggestions for how to deal with situation. My 5 year old has started using the phrase "i'm gonna kill myself." Mostly it seems to be in play. but the phrase itself worries me. I'm not sure where she picked it up from and she won't tell me were she got it from. I monitor her few daily hours of tv viewing & we don't let her watch anything other than the Nick and disney channels when she is allowed to watch. I've explained to her that hearing that phrase makes me sad and I wouldn't want to imagine a world without her. How would you my fellow mylotters and parents handle this situation?

I don't think it's anything to necessarily be worried about. But, it's best to try to find out where she is learning phrases like that (TV, school, etc) and try to put a stop to it.

I think you did the right thing by telling her how you feel about it, without adding any gory details. Now, she'll most likely just need a lot of reminders, since the phrase has become a habit. A simple, "Please don't say that," or "Remember, we don't say that," should help. You could also give her phrases th replace that one with. For instance, you could ask her if she is angry, frustrated, sad, or just being silly.

she might not even be aware of what that phrase actually means. sometimes if a kid hears something that sounds catchy they will say it. I heard a swear word once on a movie and the way the kid said it and his expressions made me want to say it too. I thought it would be fun. but i actually had no clue what it meant or didnt even think about what it meant. If you feel like she is having any depression besies that then maybe you should take her to ao counselor. but if she is generally happy then it is probablly something she heard and the expression of the person saying it intregued her so she is copying it. Just give her a new phrase to say and give yourself a really dramatic adn intreiguing expression and she might start saying that. hope this helps.

My youngest daughter used to do this as I really was annoyed at first as I knew she must of picked it up from someone at School. I just ignored my daughter everytime she said it. I think at such a young age she did not know what she really meant. It was like a swear word to her so I found by ignoring it she soon stopped it after a while.
