My 500GB HDD crashed twice....

I had a Pentium 4 computer for over an year without UPS. It worked for the whole year without any problem. 3 months back I bought a new computer with Core 2 Quad processor and 500 GB SATA HDD. In these 3 months my HDD got crashed two times. I will now explain the scenario: I keep my computer for download at 12.10 AM and the computer automatically shuts down at or before 7.20AM. On one similar day, I kept the computer to download something from internet. The next morning when I switched on my computer, HDD was gone. The computer just tries to detect the HDD but it cannot. I got the HDD replaced under warranty as it does not have any physical damage. Now 2 weeks back, HDD again crashed. It was exactly as before. Now, can anyone here guess what is happening with my HDD on some nights?

i have a source that has told me that hard drives exceeding 160 gb in storage have the tendancy to crash more and lose data. the problem with crashing has many sources including too much used space and not enough ram. but also if such a computer is bumped, moved, etc. the reading needles in the drive are very sensitive and if bumped or moved enough it can wipe out all the info on the entire hard drive even the operating system . i have more info if you need any.

160Gb and above HDDs having such problems cannot be believed because our market has loads of hdds from 160GB to 1.5 TB as well. Companies test there product thoroughly after there R and D on any new product. So such a thing cannot happen that HDDs above 160GB have a tendency to crash. But its true that HDDs if suffered sharp impact can cause crash. But in my case, my HDD was screwed to the cabinet and there after was never moved. I can't understand why the hell this happened and so I also wrote to seagate customer care but they never replied.

well if it wasnt caused by that then id say there are many possiblities such as defect in the os or in a driver or software program stored on the computer. there are alot of things that could cause that to happen my laptop has crashed 3 times in a row but that was due to hard drive corruption which was caused by it freezing after overheating it has been to the repair shop 2 times and on the third crash my warranty on it had expired so i had to do self maintenence.

first :If there were so high fluctuations your CMOS would have been toasted before you harddrive and you have also mentioned that your other P4 system is working fine. try getting a lower capacity harddrive for testing and plug it and test it. if it repeats then its problem with your mother board and also try connecting on to other sata slots on your motherboard. I feel its problem with your motherboard.

I have already got my hdd replaced and is working fine for now... But I don't keep my pc for downloading as usual. I did keep it for couple of days but nothing happened. Its working fine for now but I don't know when it will crash again. I have a Seagate 500 GB Barracuda SATA HDD and my SMPS is a 400W one. I don't think it is a motherboard problem as this does not occur every time. And SMPS is enough as I don't have graphics card. Only thing connected to SMPS are 2 fans, Intel original DG35EC motherboard, a HDD and Sony DVD writer.

Its very likely power issue. P4 uses less power compared to a Quad Core. If you rae still using the same power supply unit or the current one is less that 550W of true power than it should be an issue. Btw can i know what HDD are you using. Some HDD draws more power than others. I will recommend you use WD Caviar Green or get a WD mobile drive both are very power effience and reliable

Hi vishnu_badlapur, I too have similar problems. I own a 200GB USB hard disc, which often gets corrupted when it is subjected to little heavy loads. I get an error message as disc corrupted! But the only thing to get escape from the issue is to install Easy recovery professional software which helps to recover data from the corrupted HDD. More over i'm not forcing heavy loads on my HDD and doing only few tasks at a time. Cheers and regards, forcashksd Happy mylotting :)

In your case, the system detects the hdd and you can recover your data with a recovery tool. But in my case, hdd is rendered use less in such a way that the system can no longer detect my hdd. thus all the data is lost.

Ya I am gonna buy a UPS soon... but what I am thinking is, if the problem is not with the power, then my HDD may again crash....
