Does anyone use traffic exchanges to get referrals?

I joined EasyHits4U and TrafficSplash a few days back to try to get referrals for various PTC and GPT sites that I have joined, but it doesn't seem to be working very well. I wondered if anyone else has tried using traffic exchanges to get referrals? Has it worked for you? Are there any special tricks to it? I have heard that simply submitting your referrals links to them may not work very well, but I decided to give it a try anyway. No results as of yet though. :\
