Learning a new language can be fun in many ways, for me, leanrning a new language opens doors to a new culture. I've felt this deeply when I learn japanese. I not just learn how to communicate in a new language but also get to know so much more about the japanese culture and traditions. What about you? What makes learning new languages fun for you?

I guess it's the same for you and me. I've been learning Japanese for years now but since I'm self-taught I don't have much progress. Anyway, learning Japanese for me was like looking into a window at Japan's culture. Another fun thing about learning languages is that my fellow students can use it as a secret language that we can use if we don't want the people around us to understand what we're talking about. Lol.

About using japanese as secret language is something I've never tried. But in Malaysia, people speak in various dialects eventhough they are all chinese and even if you know chinese, you probably won't grasp much of what they are speaking if they are using dialects instead of mandarin. So it's quite a common phenomenon to find other speaking in "secret dialects" though (unless you know all of them). ^^

The cultural understanding also is my favorite part of learning a language. Another strong force for me is that I am fascinated by grammar. Learning Chinese right now has helped me understand constructions that I never would of thought of knowing only the other languages I know. I also enjoy having access to a large group of texts in the language which I can read as the author intended it. I find this to be particularly more important the less related the original language and the translated language one reads it in are.

What makes learning new language more fun, is how my friends and families react when they heard you speaking different language. You will see in their faces how fascinated they are to you. Also it does not only gives me competitive edge but also gives me new opportunities such as making new acquintances, job opportunities and a very good edge in business.
