What's so wrong with me?

Whenever I hangout with a group of friends including a guy I like, I think I do a good job of staying in conversation, making people laugh, I mean I have a good time. On the other hand, my friend is quite, laughs with the group, but is mostly 'just there'. So when I feel I did a good job of impressing the guy I like, it always ends up with the guy texting me later, asking if my other friend would possibly go out with him. I'm always stuck as being just a friend. Has anyone else had this happen?
