Does anyone out there speak Portuguese?

I have been learning Brazilian Portuguese for about a year now, and I absolutely love the language. I have decided to start studying it in college next semester and to minor in Portuguese. Does anyone here speak Portuguese? Brazilian or European? Are you a native speaker? If not, how did you learn the language? Did you take formal classes or learn on your own?

I'm Brazilian. Portuguese is beatiful but maybe you'll have some trouble to understand the language. I mean, Brazil is pretty big so there are a few different accents. People from north have a completely different accent from the south. But I assume every language have this kind of problem. Also a language reform was signed and will take place in 2009, so there'll be no difference from Brazilian Portuguese and any other one, apart from accents and pronounciation

Você é brasileiro?! Muito prazer te conheçer.....well, kinda! rsrs I've only been to Rio de Janeiro. (Both times I've been to Brazil) So, I'm used to Carioca accents. I guess that's what I model my accent after also. I recently met a Brazilian from Recife here in Tennessee, and when we were speaking in Portuguese, he told me that I had a really nice accent. That's the Carioca stuff coming out! hahaha. I didn't know about the language reform though. That's interesting. What part of Brazil are you from? Do you still live there now, or did you move abroad? tchau!

I still live in Brazil, in Belo Horizonte, 280 miles away from Rio (and sadly, from the beach). Most brazilians living in USA come from Governador Valadares, a city pretty close to where I live, so maybe you'll have a chance to hear the accent we have.
