I feel that when we are young, we really hate to lose. For us,winning a match, an exam and even a partner becomes an ego issue in young age. However as we gain experience and maturity from the events of life, thse things stop to affect us. What do you feel?

I am in complete agreement with you. When we are young whether adolescent, teenagers or youth we cannot absorb defeat or bear failure in any aspect. Even adults many a time are unable to stare defeat in the face and accept it. The biggest stumbling block is the ego as you have rightly said. When a persons ego is bruised he or she will react angrily.Even when a person matures the ego still remains intact and will never be erased unless and until the person makes a great effort to do so and the only way to control it is by taking to spiritual practice or sadhana.Even great tapasvis of ancient yore could not control their ego then what can we say of us common people? However by diligent effort ,bhakti or devotion and complete surrender to God,in the way the great devotee of Lord Krishna, Mirabai, surrendered herself to her beloved deity that she completely lost her ego. all she could see was her Lord everywhere and in everything.Only such Para-bhakti or the highest devotion can lead to the complete erasing of the ego which ultimately leads to complete detachment or the Sthithapragnya avastha or state. Then nothing matters as one goes beyond worldly life and towards the liberated state of Self Realisation.

Your response beats the rest. You pointed out all the factors that we may keep in mind to control our ego and achieve a detached state.

I remain detached because both losing as well as winning are quite natural. Success cannot exist in the absence of failure.

I really hate to lose and always think of myself as a really really competitive person. I mean I know it's the taking part that counts but in my opinion there's no harm in setting your goals really high and trying to meet them.
