How to help kids to improve writing?

There is great difference in teaching writing. The only thing given here is the topic of the composition. If the it is not familiar from their experience or very abstract, pupils have to scratch their minds to find far-fetched ideas to produce the requirement number of words for the teacher. No fun at all. I came across a teaching plan on the internet, and was amazed by the long list of detailed preparations which should be co-finished by the teacher and the pupils before the topic is handed out for actual writing. Do your have any ideas on sources of improving writing for us to share? Thanks a lot.
