Has anyone noticed that there seem to be a lot of people here on myLot and other forum boards that just have atrocious spelling?? I don't think I have ever seen a more glaring example of how education is failing our youth. What do you think?

I agree with pintac, there are many people on MyLot who speak English as a second language. Ask me to do this in Spanish, and I would certainly butcher most grammar, and probably spelling. Keep in mind the English language is the most non-sensical language. I don't know how anyone manages to learn it as a second language. Kudos to them for trying!

Good point and I probably should of mentioned that at the beginning. I was talking about the people on the forums from English speaking countries.

Well, we have to be mindful that myLot is a global community. For a lot of members, English is not their native language. So, some latitude is required here. Imagine if you had to write in a foreign language. ;)

LOL Most of the people on here that have awful spelling and grammar are people from different countries. Its their english that isnt that great. It can be a little irritating at times, but atleast they are trying to learn.

People are lazy in school and teachers are much too concerned with safety issues etc to be able to keep up, also I believe the teacher/student ratio in't what it should be.Isn't it grammar?

Yes I made a spelling mistake. I agree it seems education in the states has completely digressed to a shameful state.

Could it be that kids are starting to write "out of school" earlier than before? When we were growing up and learning to spell, we didn't have computers, IM messengers or mobile phones to send text messages. Today most kids have access to those things even before they learn to read and write. They think it's cool to use slang and text language. I was just wondering if this could be a reason. Just like a person who starts typing without learning the correct way has a hard time learning not to type with only two fingers etc.

Many forums provide a spell checker, but most people don't use it. I can spell well, but I type badly, so the result is the same unless I spend time checking, which I try to do. I understand that recent education methods do not mark down for bad spelling - you've just given me a great idea for a question - thanks.

There are many people that post and English is a Second language to them. And I know that a lot of the times when I am typing, I used internet jargon. Yes, the education system is bad, but I don’t think that is the only reason for the bad spelling of words on the net.

spelling - spelling
I admit that I am not a very good speller. That's why i wished they had s spell checker on here. At school we pretty much used a computer for everything so you really did not need to know how to spell. All you had to do was use the spell checker.

What browser are you using? Firefox 2.0 (www.mozilla.com) has a built-in spellchecker. I'm using it as I type here. Every time I type a word it doesn't recognize, it gets underlined in red. It's very convenient.

true........but as most people have already pointed out....english is not the first language of a phenomenal number of people.... another reason, to which the blame may be accorded to is the various people who type very fast without looking at the results.......and we catch the mistakes. :)

Have you read the guidlines for myLot? They ask users specifically not to mention other users bad spelling or grammar. People on here come from all over the world and many of them are not native English speakers. They say everyone is welcome here and that we shoud not make it an issue. I do agree though that some people should check their spelling but admit that I make a lot of spelling and typing errors. Of course I could always use the excuse that English is only my 3rd language but I should make an effort to spell as correctly as I can. What bothers me more than bad grammar on her is the amount of discussions about absolutely nothing.

I am sorry, I was mostly pointing out the atrocious spelling of people that are from here in the US and English as their first language.

If you think the myLot posts are the most glaring example, then you must lead a very sheltered life. At least most of the kids on myLot are able to read and write to an extent that this is enjoyable for them. Plus, a lot of it can be chalked up to speed and carelessness. But no one's getting graded here! (oh wait! We are!)

Yes, I certainly have noticed this phenomena. In fact, one of the words in the headline of your discussion is NOT spelled correctly but I'm sure I'm not the first person to make this observation. This must be quite humiliating.

Education has nothing to do with it. There are a lot of people from non English speaking countries here on mylot. As long as you understand what is being said, it's ok. Dont have to be perfect, nobody is.
