I have a dog called "diana". She is a labrador cross. I really love my dog and spend lot of time with her and i take her with me when i go to play outside with my friends and she also likes to spend time with me. She is very quite and obidient. A few weeks back i started feeding her cookies and chips and she also liked it very much and everyday after i come from college i will feed her cookies and chips. But one day after i came from college Diana came running to me wagging her tail, she wanted to have cookies. But unfortunately that day there were no cookies in my house. But Diana was restless she kept following me wherever i go in the house and kept continuously barking and wagging her tail. After sometime she starting howling. Then i went to the supermarket and got her cookies..... then after eating them she came to an relaxed state. And after that she got addicted to those cookies and wants them everyday evening. If dont give her those cookies even for a single day, she will start howling and following me wagging her tail. I think she has got addicted to those cookies what should i do, you think i should take her to an animal doctor........please give me some advice

Well to avoid other types of dog problems, that commonly occur from their diet I urge you to read this extensive list of what NOT to feed your dog. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?/c=2+1661&aid=1030 A Must Read For All Dog Owners! Cookies and chips id not exactly the best thing to treat your best canine friend with. The first response was right on in that it is not so much that your dog is addicted but the dog is getting used of being fed at the same time of day. Try replacing the cookies and chips with something more dog friendly and healthy or your dog. Carrot sticks are delicious to dogs and they tend to really like them. Much better for your dog too. Zukes make a healthy all natural treat for dogs and they come in all sorts of flavors. They can be picked up at most pet food stores and some department stores. Even hardware stores with pet sections. Best to you and your dog.

Ahhh... LOL You've spoiled her!!!! Sounds to me like you've taught her a bad habit... she's obviously a smart dog and expects her cookies from you at a certain time of day. She's only following you around and barking because she's trying to remind you that you forgot to give her some! ;) I think the best way to kick the habit is to gradually work your way back to normalcy... maybe you could go buy Dog Treats and give her those when you get back from college... then after a week or two, switch to feeding her dog food after you get back from college... Keep the routine of giving her SOMETHING when you get home, but work your way back to giving her things that dogs are supposed to have! By the way, this is a cute story!!!! Good Luck!!!!

My parents dogs would get a cookie or treat after they came in from doing there stuff outside. This is how they bribed them to come in. The dogs will get over weight if you only feed them cookies. Our trick is to buy a different kind of dog food and keep that as a treat 2 or 3 pieces. They like it and its fun having them want a treat and knowing they will come for it if you need to bribe them. It worked for us at my parents. But I never let it get to my dogs. I have 3 dogs that I don't need to bribe like my parents do. But I do give them a treat usually once a day for something. Like well sit and do tricks. Or if they were good and didn't destroy my house when I came home. As your dog a treat when you come home from college just because. :) Either way its fun to have a pooch that is kind of needy. As long as its a healthy addiction it shouldn't be to bad. Just make it a once a day thing. When you come home from school it will see your books or pack sack. Different from when you come home from a friends with just a purse, or shopping bags. It will learn the difference.

I have for min dogs. And I always have to watch there weight. I wont let them get over 11 pounds. It will hurt there spine. I spoil my dogs with good treats like peanut butter bones. There just like a cookie. I think your dog will be fine just got to watch what you feed her.

There are healthy dog cookies. They are home aid. There called peanut butter bones. Its a cookie made with peanut butter but wont hurt your dog. I give them to my dogs. I think dogs are just like humans if we can get addicted to stuff we eat. Why cant they?.

Yes friend I think you are right....but in my location there are no peanut butter cookies available, So I have decided to give her doggy treats and vegetables. Usually her diet includes dog food, milk, dog biscuits and bread. And i accidentally feed her those cookies....now i have stopped it and I am giving her doggy treats...which are really healthy for dogs. Happy MYlotting

No I dont think its addiction. For example if we have lunch at 1pm daily and another day if you are not able to have at 1pm what will happen? Your stomach will continuously remind of having a lunch. But when you stop having lunch at 1pm exactly your body will get used to it slowly.. This is the case where now Diana is.... Happy mylotting Sudarsan :)

well firstly according to me dogs are hardly addicted to anything.... they do take a liking to something but not addicted..... but if you would like to say that then its ok..... now your dog has gotten used to that feeding time.... try giving her something other than the cookie..... maybe a nice doggy chew stick or a doggy biscuit..... see what is her reaction then.... does she still follow you around after feeding her that or she is satisfied...... if she still follows you around then she wants the cookies..... only...!! so you have to break that habit of hers or rather craving of her for the cookie..... by giving her other various treats only when she listens to you..... be a little stern with her...though i know you wouldnt want to but its not like i am telling you to whack her or something.... use a stern voice and say no.... when she follows you around..... she will howl for sometime and then finally stop it when she knows that nothing is coming out of the howling..... if you keep giving her stuff when she barks or howls then its your fault as she will think that everytime when you come home its a game that you play with her where you want her to follow you around the whole house and then you want her to bark and then want her to howl so thats when she will get her treat.... start being stern and ignore the howls.... when she starts listening to the stern voice treat her so she will know that howling will definately not get her any treat and please.... change the treat !!

I don't think your Diana is addicted. She has discovered however that if she does the things you have mentioned she will get her cookies and therefore she continues to do what it takes to get the cookies she loves so much. As long as you let her get away with this behavior she will continue to do it. Just tell her no on the days that there is no cookies and since she has got what she wanted it will take a piece of time for you to get it through her head that if there isn't cookies that no matter how much she does the behavior no cookies are going to appear. You are the boss and she needs to know this.

Yes friend i know that i am the boss, but if i say no she starts following me wherever i go in the house wagging her tail...and also barks and howls sometimes. I cannot tell her no to her as i love her soo much. But now i have decided to limit her cookies to 2 cookie a day. Thanks for ur response dear friend. Happy Mylotting

I agree with the majority response, that there is no addiction, just a trained behaviour. My 4 dogs get a joint snack nightly( glucosamine, etc. ) At exactly 9 pm they are waiting for it. So dogs do train US very well. THEY on the other hand are not so easy. Consistency is key in undoing some of this behaviour. And substituting dog biscuits is a good step in the right direction. Carrot sticks as someone mentioned and raw potatoes, dogs like those as snacks as well and are more healthy! If already overweight, you might go with the veggies as alot of dog biscuits tend to be high in calories as well. Good luck in YOUR training!

sundarsan u must have empty packs of cookies.show her that pack and said no.Give her that empty pak if she follow you.Its not addiction its just you unknowingly taught her bad habit. It will take little time as its her favorite food. But her memories will get fed up with time.If she irritates you give her something else than cookies.
