The best operating system for networking is Linux/BSD/Unix. Because Unix, Linux and BSD were build for networking / the internet. On Linux or BSD you can surf the internet without worrying about spyware or viruses. But on Windows you need additional software (antivirus/anti-spyware) to surf the internet safely. If you are using Windows I recommended run Damn Small Linux on a virtualbox ( http://www.virtualbox.org/ ) when surfing the net. But if you want to try Linux then I recomended Ubuntu get it from http://www.ubuntu.com . Good luck :)

BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) refers to particular version of Unix operating system that is developed at and distributed from the University of California at Berkeley. BSD is distributed under the BSD license. For your information Mac OS is based on BSD. I you want to read more, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Software_Distribution

I strongly recommend you to try Ubuntu-a totally free and one of the most popular Linux distro in the world. You can get it for free online, just search 'free linux cd' or 'Ubuntu shipit' and you will find the pages.I have applied 3 free linux cd from it,and 2 of them have already arrived. What's more,Ubuntu is really a very excellent Linux distro.

thanks nocovi, i had earlier just heard of RED hat Linux and UNIX. Well tell me one thing i have heard that using LINUX is not an easy job. Is it true? And secondly if i install UBUNTU then would i need drivers of sound,graphics..etc?

It all depends on what will You use the computer for. If You will also use it for work, then linux is not a viable choice, given the poor variety of software that can be installed on it. Anyway, in my expert opinion,XP Professional would be the best choice (second to a good Windows 98SE but You can;t find it anymore on the market).

i have not tried Linux but i knew that windows is the best operating system . we can provide all around safety just by installing a anti virus in the system and also ensure its security . as far as i heard that Linux is virus free but i am confused whether its mac or Linux is virus free . i think windows xp is good as it is the most famous and the widely used operating system even after the latest version of the windows was introduced

why i recommend to Linux or Mac OS, there is no virus or trojan at all attack'em, but nobody safe from virus or trojan, even use linux or Mac OS. Base from IT information, most of virus and trojan attack windows OS, u must carefully to use windows
