Do you buy bookmarks (the nice hallmark ones) , or do you just cut out any piece of spare cardboard or carton around the house for your bookmarks. If you do buy bookmarks, how much are you willing to pay for them. Thanks. happy lottin

I have loved reading all my life and when I was young, oh how I did covet store bought bookmarks! I never got to buy any as mom said it was a waste of money, make my own. I did, but it just wasn't the same! Now that I can buy my own for hte past 30 years, have I? No, I still just make my own - whatever I have laying around the house at the time! Envelope from a bill I paid online, coupon I won't use, tag from a blouse... but I have been guilty of using wallet photos of my grand daughter. Shame on me, they should be in an album, but if they are there, I will use them! I go to Borders about once/twice a week just to see their sale stuff as I continue my love of reading by encouraging my GD's to read and the yard sales this year were slim pickings for books, but I was going to buy my 8you GD a book mark for her stocking and they were $5.00! I thought I'd choke! $5 for this little nothing piece of paper? What a waste of money, she loves crafts so she can make her own at our next craft session... and I can hear my mom in my head saying "see, I told you so, but did you believe me, oh, no!".

That's a bit steep for a bookmark, but I like the idea of photos as bookmarks -- there's a personal touch. Thanks for that

I think so to, but tell Borders that! They have some really nice ones, but I am not going to pay $5 for one! I can get a book for that! It buys lunch! 2-3 gallons of gas(at the moment!)But there they are, hanging as you check out. And I guess people do buy them as there is always empty slots and hooks. GO figure!

Actually I do neither. I will usually just fold the corner of the page that I stop reading on.

Typically the books that I am reading I have bought. After I am done with them I either pass them on to friends or donate to charity, either way its my property so not so bad.

The librarian won't like that, but that is very practical. Thanks for responding.

I use to buy bookmarks, especially if I see a really cute one. But now, I make them out of cross stitch! And I even sell them online.

I usually don't buy bookmarks - rather expensive; except those that are sold for charity homes. I use different things as bookmarks, like unwanted business cards, post-it notes, small pieces of paper, postcards.

It's funny that you mentioned "the nice Hallmark ones" because I used to work at Hallmark. Bookmarks were under me, and I have designed a few haha! anyway, I love to read but most of the time I don't have a bookmark handy so i just use anything (business card, bus pass, flyer etc.) as an insert to remind me on what page i am. This is kinda weird because I have a bookmark collection that i never seem to use.

Wow, that's really cool. I'd like your job -- but I am not so lucky , I got to write too -- but I wrote software codes, not very poetic. Thanks for sharing.

if i have enough time i make 1 or more depends upon whom i will give it too-i prefer personalized to give more meaning to it, but if i dnt have time i will just grab it from the bookstore or card shop..i will just address it using my penmanship.. i am a hand crafter so most of the time i alot time to make a personalized one esp for holidays like christmas and bitrhdays.

i never buy bookmarks. ive seen some very lovely ones that i liked, but would never actually use in my books. they are usually to thick and would keep the book from closing all the way when i set it down..which makes the binding kind of stand slightly opened..which drives me insane lol! i just cut a piece of very thin paper to use as a bookmark.

Are you referring to the thick magnetic ones, I think I've seen some of those, really neat designs, the last one I saw had Celtic designs in it. I bought a book last weekend, couldn't find a bookmark around my workstation, so I used a thin paper clip. Thanks for sharing.

My fiance and I actually do neither. We use any scrap piece of paper we have laying around, recently it was the number to a friend of ours who had changed his number. I do like to just use something around the house as while the bookmarks are cute, they aren't really needed. If I get one as a gift, I won't neglect it.

I actually do that too, sometimes I use tee shirt tags, or what ever nice cardboard-like materials I can find around the house. Thanks for that.

Hi there. I can't remember the last time I bought bookmarks since I usually design and make them myself. I simply make the image on my computer through simple applications such as Word or MSPaint - nothing fancy, really - then print the image out on photo-paper or some other specialized paper and have it laminated. I find that it's more durable that way and would serve its purpose for a longer time than if I were to buy standard Hallmark bookmarks.

That's a great idea. I tried laminating too at some point in time, I did notice though that the bookmark 'curls' a bit after laminating it, I used 125 microns of laminating pouch. I am not sure if using a thinner photopaper will produce better results, I'll experiment one more time. Thanks for sharing.
