in china it's common for people to smoke in restaurants . And i think it is not a good for other non customers and the restaurant staff . In your country , is smoking banned to protect the health of the restaurant staff and the non smoking customers ? Would you like to go to a restaurant where pople are smoking ?

I am from Canada and smoking has been banned in stores, hospitals, schools and public places. There is talk about banning it in outdoor children's play areas and has recently been banned in several provinces when a child is riding in the car. There was talk about it being banned in jails too but I do not know if that went through. I understand there are more smokers in Asian countries and the laws tend to be lax. I could not eat anymore where people smoke because the smoke taste gets into the food, but I find it hard to breath now when in a confined space and would not be able to stand being in a restaurant with a lot of smokers.

I think the law came into effect about restaurants when all that publicity came about the second hand smoke. It was realized that the workers in bars and restaurants were breathing this in with the health repercussions. In order to make the workplace safe they banned the smoking in the restaurants and bars. I agree they are now tending to over react in some of the laws like outdoor smoking near playgrounds.

In the US the smoking laws vary, but around me it is banned. Now I don's smoke during meals, but I think having laws against it is a bad idea. First of all, someone owns that restaurant. It should be up to the owner if people are allowed to smoke in his/her restaurant. Laws against smoking in restaurants is like the government telling you you can't smoke in your own house or back yard. It is oppressive, and I think evil. Second. People can choose where to work, and where to eat. Before this area had smoking bans, already about 1/3 of the bars were no smoking anyway, because owners either did not like it, or they wanted to cater to non-smokers. This is the right way to have non-smoking establishments. The same went for restaurants, and some restaurants had entirely different sections for smoking and non-smoking, where a wall separated the two, and there was a system that ventilated the smoke. Again, this is a reasonable way to make customers happy, without the law getting involved. Basically the government should not have the right to tell people that something legal (smoking) cannot be done in their property (a restaurant). To do so is oppressive, and a huge step back in basic property rights. Unfortunately The US is taking huge steps backward by doing this type of thing. Owners should have the right to make their own choices, just as customers can choose to go to whatever restaurants they want to, and avoid the ones they want to avoid.
