I ma about 7 weeks pregnant and about a week and a half a ago i was spotting a little bit (not a lot at all) but i went to the doctor and she did blood tests to check my hormones levels. I talked to them today and they said the results were good, my hcg was rising like it should be, but they want to go ahead and do a sonogram to make sure its not ectopic. But she also wants me to take prometrium as a precautionary measure. I looked into it and it is a progesterone hormone supplement. It is usaully given to premenopausal women who have been skipping periods, but they say is can help prevent misscarriages. But most of the information i found said that it should not be taken during pregnancy, but only before conception, and it will only be given in the first trimester if the benefits outweigh the risks and usually with a history of misscariages, but ive never had one before..i have a healthy 2 1/2 year old and no complications at all with her. I don't think i should take this stuff. She said it would just help make sure my uterine lining is strong enough to support the pregnancy..and i can see how that would be good if i lost a lot of blood, but i didn't? What would you guys do? Anybody every been on this before?

I was put on progesterone pills when I was pregnant with my son for the first trimester. It is safe, I believe it is to help the lining of your uterous so the baby is able to imbed deeper into your uterine wall. That is what my OB told me. I never had any bleeding or spotting, but she said my progesterone levels were a little low so she put me on them. I did notice about a week after taking them my pregnancy symptoms went into overdrive! But I would def. keep taking it if your doctor suggested it.

The reason he gave you the prometrium is because progesterone is VITAL to supporting a pregnancy until the placenta can support it. If your progesterone level is not high enough, you could miscarry. I would DEFINITELY take it. It won't harm you, and it very well may be what you need to keep your pregnancy. I wish you luck, and listen to your Dr. Here is a link with good information for you: http://pregnancy.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Prometrium_to_Prevent_Miscarriage

I personally think your doctor is your best judge. Since she or he knows your situation from the beginning, she should be right. If you are not happy about your doctors prescription, just try some other doctor and confirm this before your situation gets worse. Good luck and happy new year to you and your little one..

I was also told to take prometrium tablet once a day for 1 month from week 5, as I had a miscarriage in my first pregnancy. It is safe to take these tablets even in your pregnancy so as to keep your hormones level high. I think whatever doctor suggests is for your good health and keep up the pregnancy.
