MaAfee Updates get my PC freeze

Do you have the same experience with McAfee anti-virus? During updates, my PC is almost not working, it is very slow. Seems like majority of the memory has been use by this anti-virus when it is in-process in downloading and installing updates. But after that, it goes back to the normal speed.

Much of the reason it slows or stops your system has to do with two things. How fast your processor is and how much memory you have. I use McAfee and I have it set to protect my computer from every angle. Spyware, virus's as well as a firewall. My processor is only 1.8 Ghrz but I have 512mb memory. It does slow my system, at times quite a bit, while updating but never causes it to freeze. So something else is going on with you if your system is hanging. My guess is memory. Do you have enough? There are other options as you know but I feel that McAfee offers the best protection for the money. You can disable some of the options but not sure that will make a difference during the update sequence.

Thank you for pointing this out, however, I think this is not the reason because I have 2.2GHz and 1.0 GB memory. I have found out that I have a lot of sites open and running applications when the updates happen, so I guess it is the reason.

Thank you very much for your best response. Much appreciated. I may mention one other thing. I had an old computer at one time that had 512mg memory but it was running very slow even for it. I tried everything but I noticed that whenever I had almost anything running the disk drive was running non stop. I found a program on Microsoft that when placed on a floppy disk would let you boot with it. It proved, in graphic form, that I had a bad memory card. So most of the time it was running with virtual storage. I replaced it and all was well. I am not sure that program is still available but I use it now and then. I doubt that is your problem however if you have a fairly new computer and you most assuredly do have enough memory. Just a thought. Thank you again.

HI I don't use McAfee, I don't like to pay for things, I prefer the free stuff like Avast!. But, I guess you can configure how that software runs, in front end or in back end. It means, more memory and resources used or less. Do a search on Preferences... Hope it helped.

Thanks for the advice, I'll consider it.
