cheap and cheerful food

ONe of the things i plan to do in the new year is spend less money on food. Does anyone have any ideas about food that costs as little as possible? I am not a great cook, but I can learn fairly fast. I dont like red meat, thats about all. Any ideas on how I can cut the food costs?

my boss made taco salad the other day and it was really good. my coworker said its not really expensive. she used hamburger,taco seasoning,cheese,lettuce,tomatoe and salsa with chips on the side.
