Is anyone losing their mind since it is winter and they cannot work in the yard?

I am about to go insane. Last summer I got started on my yard and got so into it that is all I did in my spare time. I am going crazy inside this winter. All I can think of is what new plants/flowers to put in come spring time. I have a small yard in front and back and plan to fill the entire front with flowering plants and small trees and do away with ALL the grass. My side yard along my house has several mid sized crepe myrtles and I have both sides of the house and in front of it done with roses, tiger lilies, wisteria and many, many other things. My flower boxes at each side of the porch are full of summer flowers and winter mums that come up after the summer things die. I have winter plants put in on top of the summer ones to ensure color and plants all the time. My friends think I am losing my mind...maybe I am. I had such a good time last summer planting that I didn't mind being crippled from kneeling for hours on end. The payoff came when strangers walking and driving by would stop to view and comment. I have nearly every kind of plant out there I can get my hands on. It has turned into an obsession and I am impatiently waiting for spring so I can get back out. I finally stopped the first part of Dec. after getting bulbs in and only because I ran out!! I am designing a small concrete retaining wall that will fit between the old brick sidewalk and my yard and checking out more plants online for order. Does anyone else have this obsession? If I ever sell my house I will lose it because I have chosen every plant and bush for its beauty and some cannot be found again. I think I need professional help. What about you? Anyone out there this bad off?

I have two windows in my office that look out over my backyard and it's hard to not want to be out there with my garden. Last year was really our first year as gardeners and we are now hooked. Although I don't really have the urge to get out there today as it's just over minus 30 here. Brrrrr. This is the time for garden planning, so we get it right this year. :) This year we are planning to try square foot gardening. It looks like it will save space and they will be raised beds so there is less work getting the clay soil below worked so we can grow things.

We have a number of perennials and it would be great to plant other plants that would come up and flower a bit later. I will give that a try. thanks

I wonder if there's a gardeners anonymous? The obsession isn't rare. Winter is the time to get out all the seed and plant catalogs (or go online) and find what you want to enhance what you've already got. Take time to sit down and sketch out your yard and beds you plan to make. It's gonna be a long winter, but when the ground thaws, you'll have your plans all laid out and be ready to go again.

I too love my garden I never had the space or time when I lived in the UK. Now I live in Bulgaria and have all the time and space i need to create! I grow mainly vegetables though and some of these can still be planted over the winter months. Have you got a spare room or greenhouse? If you have you can start your planting now, in pots from seed, so that they are ready to go out when the ground thaws. Some stuff can be planted now outside under polythene. Believe me, you are not the only obsessive! Its such a rewarding experience to see a garden come to life under your own guidance.

Unfortunatly, no room indoors to start plants and my cats would think it was a snack for them! I have never had the bug for gardening as I have the past 2 yrs. It is so nice to see all that work come up so beautiful and in all different ccolors. I go through a lot of ibuprofen! ;-) My problem is I am out for the perfect cottage garden. I want something that makes people stop and enjoy the color in addition to all the butterflies that it is attracting. I hadn't seen a butterfly (Kansas) in years and now, they are here almost daily. I am now looking for the right seed to cover the parkay between the brick sidewalk and the street. Not sure if I will get in trouble for it by the city, but I am going to do it anyway. I can only imagine that covered in all different colors and flowers and then in my yard! I have had people joke if I would work in their yard. I would love to make a business out of this but at my age afraid it would cripple me..lol.
