Self serve vegetables in supermarkets with brown paper bags?

Does anyone know why supermarkets dont sell vegetables loose, with brown paper bags to put them in rather than plastic bags? I guess the answer has to do with marketing, but I for one would be only to happy to go back to a DIY version of what the greengrocer used to provide!

I think it depends where you buy. I shop in the store that provide plastic bags, or pre-pack fruits and veggie.
It all depends on store locations.
