Kitty Litter, All Over the Place?

We've had a cat for over a year. And, currently, we keep the litter box in our downstairs (unused) shower. That way, it's out of our way and view. In the warmer months, we were keeping it in the basement with the basement door slightly ajar. But, during the winter, the draft was too much and our heat kept kicking on. So, now, it's back in the shower. And, I am so sick of litter being scattered all over the place. So, my husband wanted a bath mat. I hate those, because if they get "peed" on, they need constant washing. So, in front of the litter box, I got a 3 dollar "outdoor" mat (a "prickly" one) and placed it right under the box - sticking out the front. That way, loose litter will easily come off my cat's paws. Then, on the floor in the bathroom, I got the rubber, waffle weave, shelf paper. That also traps the loose litter. Now, it isn't all over my downstairs as in the past. Has anyone else tried anything similar? What works for you?
