Discount Dental Plans vs Insurance

United States

I have a lot of friends asking me about the discount dental plan I have and why it would benefit them to use that instead of insurance, so I thought I'd start a discussion on here and explain my point of view. A dental plan (In the US) is typically $30-$60 a month on your own with no employer. If you add that up the minimum is $30 x 12 months = $360 each year. You usually have a $1000-$1500 maximum that the plan will pay out per year. Therefore, if you are only using it for small procedures, it would benefit you to have actual insurance. However, if you are using it for more major work, such as Root Canal Treatment, you would probably find it more beneficial to use a dental discount plan. The reason is because a root canal can cost you $1600 after the entire completion of it (the surgery, temporary crown, permanent crown, x rays). If you are capped out at $1000, why would you bother spending $360 each year to have to pay another $300 for one treatment? Granted, some have co-insurance which is usually something similar to having you pay 80% and they will pay the additional 20% after your $1000 cap is met, but it's still not worth it in my opinion. A dental discount plan will help you every time. You pay for it upfront and it's usually about $85 per year which comes out to $7.08 per month if you want to do the math. You can usually use it right of way, and when you get to the dentist you will save between 30-50 % each time on your procedures. For me, I use one called GE Wellness Plan and my molar root canal cost me $300 less on the surgery part because of it. Some of them even offer free xrays, checkups, etc. I needed about $10,000 worth of work because my teeth shifted when my wisdom teeth came in impacted and it caused cracking and all kinds of other problems and I am paying $3500 on my credit card after the discount plan. If you feel like it's something you are interested in, please go to my website at www.charitywalkermall.blogspot.com Then click on "dental" on the right side. It would help out my National Charity Team by helping pay for the Administrative costs associated with my community portal. Any questions or concerns leave them here and I will gladly respond.

You've done the maths, and it certainly makes sense. It works differently in my country, but if I was in the US I'd definitely be checking out your site. That is a huge saving.
