Clean VENETIAN BLINDS

One task I truly dread but it has to be done, is cleaning venetian blinds. I am talking horizontal blinds, not the vertical cloth ones. Have you ever thoroughly cleaned any venetian blind in your home? If so, what technique did you find most favorable? What works best for you? I prefer to fill the bath tub with hot water and P.S.T. cleaner. I have the blind extended and soak for a few minuted. I get a nice soft dandy brush and gently brush the slats of the blind. Before taking out of the tub, I go over the blind with my hand and make sure it is clean of debris, dust and or spots. I have used a cloth in addition to a brush as well. I let the tub drain and refill it. I put the blind back in and rinse well before gathering it up, draining excess water off and sitting it up with the slats vertical, to drip dry for 10-15 minutes and then I rehang right away. I leave the blind down and open until it had dried completely on it's own. I have used those tools made to clean blinds, you know the fluffy ones that you get the four or five slats through at a time and then pull across ways, along the slats? Works mediocre for a quick dusting but no good for a deep clean. I have tried washing each slat by hand with a cloth as it remains hanging. What a huge waist of time. I prefer the bath tub method because it works good and it is quick.

The way I always do it... is I take them outside. I open them and lay them flat on the ground. I use the hose to wet them... then scrab them with a soft little handbroom and some detergent like Jif or Ajax. I rinse them with the hose... and then hang them on the washing line to dry. That's the easy way... except that there is nothing easy about washing venetian blinds. I hate that job.

Thank you Aussies2007, me too but it has to be done. I like your technique however do the blinds not get dirty from the ground? I have thought of hanging the blinds on the cloths line as well but just opted to set them upright in a corner. It served it's purpose. The blinds looked great. Best to you in 2009! Thanks for stopping by.

Aussie, an awesome 2012 to you too and beyond. Great to see your added comment. I was thinking that the lawn may be a perfect place. I do like your technique and did I mention that I am impressed that you clean too? All The Best always!

Depending on what sort of ground you put them on... some loose dirt might get on them. But what I do... is I rinse them one more time with the hose... once they are hanging on the clothing line. Happy New Year.

Hahahahaha! Sorry, I had to laugh. I've gone through the cleaning each individual slat before... oh, what a job! Especially when you have these things on every window in your house! I learned to wash them the same way you do... exactly the same. It cleans them better, in my opinion, because you don't get tired of standing there and wiping each slat, getting a bit careless in the process when you get tired of it. I agree completely that the bathtub is better than any gadget you can buy to clean these things. I just put the brush attachment of my vacuum cleaner on for a quick dusting but take them down and use the bathtub method for a thorough cleaning.

Exactly! Re: Every window in your house. It does a great job and glad to read that you clean them the same. Yes and get a bit careless as you are getting tired standing there if to do each slat by hand and ooops, there is a bent or worse, a broken slat, just like that. Then you are looking to go purchase a new blind. Otherwise it looks just bad. Nice. Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your response. Best to you in 2009 mentalward.

I gotta be honest, when I clean the blinds - and I use the term "clean" loosely, it usually involves a vacuum, Swiffer product of some sort, and that's about it. No advice from me, just a high five on your cleaning skills.
