Why are 3D movies that are shown on TV not that 3D-ish?

The first 3D movie that I saw really blew me away. I still remember that twig that almost poked my eye when the camera poised over it at the end of a scene.
Why do I not get the same effect while watching 3D movies on television inspite of having those glasses?
