Why do Hybrid Cars Cost so Much?

I was facing a long commute so I needed to trade my truck for something more economical. I ended up with a Prius that cost as much as my full size, loaded truck. Also, why would GM offer a Cadillac hypbrid and not an economy (cheaper) sized one? Money would not be the issue if you were buying on of those, right?
