hi friends. i am not sure where to post this discussion so i am posting it here.this is something thats been in my mind for a very long time.i am from india and and females in the family dont even enter the pooja room (room where they have those pictures of god) because they are in their period.as for me,its just humbug.but i want to know,if woman in foreign countries follow this same stuff and stay away from chuches or any worshipping places during their period.the weird thing about my country is they protest when the male community bans women from entering certain temples but they themselves stay away from it during their period.another silly superstition?any thoughts on this subject?

Hi Sreekanth, I think it is a discriminaion against women. Everybody in this world leave out waster materials from their body daily. So, itt is not an excuse at all. Also, it is scientifically proved that the blood that comes out during period is not impure blood. What do you say about women are not allowed to visit temples when they are more than 3 months pregnant?

Also, if some special puja is happening and you are not attending it, everybody in the family will come to know that you have got your period. This makes you feel embarassed. Period is something personal and it has nothing to do with the religion.

Yes, I know. Being a Hindu, I have grown up following such habits, which totally infuriated me. I could never understand how I could be impure for God because of something which God has given me. I also found it very awkward when ladies in the family could not do the puja during those days and had to turn to their husbands or sons for help! I mean…this is something so personal, I share it only when I want to and with whom I want to. I don’t follow this even now but that is more because I don’t follow most of the rituals of Hinduism.

I don't see any reason that having your period should keep you from going to church if you wanted to. All a period is is an indicator that a woman can have children. That it all it is. I know that each religion is different, so they're going to have they're own beliefs and stuff, but that's the way I think.

I am a Christian and people in my country view things the same way you do. A woman having her period is considered unclean. From what I've read, this rule dates from ancient times when women didn't use anything to collect the menstrual blood! I think it's perfectly understandable, because blood is a good environment for bacteria and infections could spread very easily. This is not the case today, when we have a lot of products to choose from. Personally, I wouldn't miss my best friend's wedding because I'm on my period...

I am from India - Kerala. Christians in my state go to church and recieve holy communion also on period days. Hindus are not allowed to go to temples on those days. I think not allowing women in temples during period days is a serious descrimination.

I am from the US and have grown up in Baptist churches. We went no matter what. Although, each religion has their own things that the believer has questions about at one point or another. I think if you are not breaking a core belief, in other words, a deal breaker to Heaven, Enlightenment, etc., then you can come up with your own conclusion as to how you will act when it comes to this belief.
