This week at "The Rest Of The Story" we took a look at homelessness in America and the impact of the foreclosure and layoff crisis. Homelessness is not always what we may think, it is not the drunken panhandler down on the corner. In a telephone interview with Adam Gaeddert from the National Coalition for The Homeless and Brian Wilson from the Homeless Ministry Connection we discussed the current situation. Adam informed me that recently at the Conference Of Mayors they polled 25 major cities to determine if foreclosure is in fact causing an increase in homelessness, the overall answer was a definitive "Yes"! The fastest growing population among the homeless are families, mostly single mothers with an average of 2 kids. As many as 1.25 million children are believed to be homeless in America. Single mothers and their children also represent the largest population of Americans living below the poverty line. You may think you are safe from foreclosure if you rent your home, however this is not always true. Some of the hardest hit families did not own their home, they rented. They paid their rent on time and never new that their landlord was not paying his mortgage. In many cases they had little or no notice of the pending foreclosure and there were no laws in place to protect them. Listen to the full version at therestofthestory.ning.com
