I am planning on upgrading my pc or to buy a new one. I have my eyes set on the Quad core processors of intel as my processor. Is this type of processor stable and is it worth my money. If anyone has any experience in using this type of processor I would very much appreciate your feedback on this. Thanks!

I would say go for Core 2 duo rather than to quadcore. Quadcores are best fit for servers, for home use it will not be that worth because there haven't been any applications created which atleast uses both the cores of a processor completely. Buying a quad core will be a waste because you won't be able to use it to the full. AT the maximum you can just make 2 cores to get occupied with all the loads & the rest 2 cores would sit idle. So why buying something when its of not that use. You can use that extra money you save upon buying a C2D than a quad core with some other parts. SO my vote goes to core 2 duo.

What if you are planning on using CAD programs, such as autocad 2009, wouldn't the quad core proccessor be more apt to handle the work, or would that be the job of the graphics processor? Also, with respect to running virtual machines, i have a 2.0 Ghz core 2 duo now and the performance of the virtual machines is pretty crippled, would an upgrade to a quad core processor be a fix to that problem?

I have used Core 2 duo , which was very good, stable and fast. It seems that Quad core would also be as good as Core 2. Although Quad core is not very much common but its reviews state that is is fast and reliable cpu
