Normally we do not need any kind of vitamins from external source since our body derives the same from the food we eat, provided of course the diet is balanced. Now do we partake of balanced diet? How many are really aware of what is balanced diet! Generally we eat what pleases our taste buds. We tend to eat more of those food items that may appeal to us than what our body truely needs. Again, there can be a situation when we contract a serious disease like malaria, typhoid etc which denudes our body of much of the internal sources faster than it is capable of regenerating. In such cases the physician often precribes a course of certain type of vitamin or even multi-vitamin depending on the malaise of the patient or his/her condition. And there is always a time-period for which that vitamin are to be taken along with normal diet. If exceeded, it can cause what is known as hyper-vitaminosis. So multi-vitamins may be used as a supplement only for a limited time and that too after consulting a physician or nutritionist who must be made aware of physical condition of the person desiring to partake a course of vitamin (multi or otherwise).

As you mention then it shouldn't be neccesary if only we get the right kind of food. :) Unfortunatly not too many people get everything they need from their diet.

Very true. More than half the world's population cannot afford A single meal. So when we talk about having a balanced diet and hence vitamins, it does appear out of depth. But then that is a ifferent genre of discussion altogether. Even those who are reasonably wealthy enough to afford all the meals in a day suffer from unbalanced intake of vitamins and minerals.
