We, Filipinos love fish. I posted this discussion here in the Philippines section because I don't exactly know how other people in other countries prepare their fish. But usually we cut our fish in half and fry, or make it into "paksiw", "ihaw", "tinola","escabeche" etc. My question is if a fish is cut in half, which half do you usually pick? The head part? or the tail part? I kind of like the head part because the eyes and brain are so juicy although it tends to have less meat. How about you?

When I was younger I preferred the tail but as I gets older, I realized the head part is much better. When it vors to bangus, however, I choose the middle cut however, where the belly is, you know how delivious the belly part of the bangus. When it comes to fried or grilled tilapia I want it as a whole. While with other fishes such as in escabeche, it's alright to be cut into two pieces for sure I'll take the head, hehe it's lunchtime, I feel hungry.

Oh I have to agree. The belly of the bangus is the most delicious part. There's not much to eat in the other parts especially if it's not boneless. Happy eating. hehe

I love the tail but my wife loves the head..I don't really like it since it has scales. I prefer to eat the tail part- it has the meat..

Well some fishes in the market are being de-scaled before they display them so it saves the buyer time having to scale the fish themselves.

your discussion is funny but makes sense since we filipinos are into fish - lol. usually, my mom complains whenever she fried fish becuase i ALWAYS get the tail. and leave the heads to her and whoever is dining with us. LOL. so to solve the problem she buys this blue marlin fish - shaped like a soft diamond. but it's not always available. lol. so back on tails for me. =)

I eat fish but it depends on the fish if its too "malansa" haha. To answer your question if which part will I'm gonna pick, I'll go for tail part because there's alot of meat to eat in that part.

I would go for the tail part. Considering that there is more meat there. I really do not like the head part. But I think you are right, the head part is more tasty since my wife likes the heard part and told me that it is better tasting than the tail part. Well, I guess, its a great pair. She always has the head part and I always have the tail part. Perfect combination.

I'd go for the head because the tail has more bones than the head :) Also if it's "paksiw" I like to pick on the head and try to get as much out of it as I could - it's fun! And of course I only do that at home because I use my hands :P I've never had fish for tinola - it's always chicken. I don't think it would even taste good because tinola is a little bland and the chicken flavor is what's actually giving it a thick flavor. Thanks for the response on my discussion!

Finally, a head-lover! I am not really sure if it's called fish tinola. All I know is we do make fish soup and of course chicken tinola is much tastier because of the flavor but the fish is okay. It tastes like well....fish!

I love to eat fish almost all of the time but only if it is cook with a little sauce or cook it in tinola, it dont like it to cook as fried but i can eat it if no choice. Back to your question, if the fish cut in half... i would always pick the head part, as you said it is juicy, and i really like to suck the eyes and the brain, i cant describe the feeling while eating the head part of the fish..it taste so yummy and different!
