Should you run the laptop on the battery and recharge when it runs out?

I was told by my friend that th laptop should not be run on the mains but should be run on teh battery and when it runs out youshoudl recharge it. When it is recharged it should agian be run on the battery by unplugging the mains. He said that it shoud not be run ofn teh mains once the battery is charged or else the battery life gets shortened. Is there some truth in it?
