That is what I was asked during supper. I usually always buy the big bag of Great Value corn on the cob and the other day I decided to get the Green Giant. And when I tasted it tonight I said that it was not near as good as the off brand(Great Value). And Brad said "Is there such a thing as off brand corn?" He said that it all came out of a field. So, does it really matter? Is there such a thing as off brand corn? It does all come out of a field. But do they do something to the Green Giant in the field that they do not do to the off brand corn in the field. Does it get more fertilizer or more anything??? I do not have a clue but it is a good question. Or is it all the same and they just want to charge you more for one bag than for the other bag? Which brings me to another question Are the bags more expensive?? Maybe that is it maybe the cheap brand uses a cheaper bag and the Green Giant uses a more expensive bag. LOL Who knows I just wanted to share and see your views here!!!

hello susan that is weird that the great value corn tasted better to you than the green giant corn did. i thought that the better brands of anything would taste better than an off brand would. but i do buy the great value items at Kroger's grocery store as well. i do not buy the frozen corn thou i buy the great value corn in the cans. and i really cannot tell a different in any canned product either. and it might be the bags or the containers that they put the products in before that they are shipped out like that. i have never thought about that. it might also be the way that they prepare the items in the factory for sell, like flash freezing them or not. lol you know? i haven't a clue. but thanks for the good discussion. take care and have a beautiful afternoon.

This has been something I have often thought about. I mean I know there is a difference between home raised beef or pork than what you buy in the store due to how the animal is fed, but vegetables? How does a field of corn know it is going to be made into a name brand product or off brand? I started looking at the labels and was surprised to find that both name and off brands are sometimes made by the same company. Smart marketing if you think about it. Let's say that the smith company sells a brand name veggie for $2.89 for a frozen bag. Most people will not buy it at that price, however if the same company makes the same size bag for $1.89 and markets it under an off brand name, you don't really realize it but you are still purchasing the product from the same company. It's a win-win situation for them. Processing companies usually process items for several companies, end up using the same product, but just change the label. Just my humble opinion.

That's a funny thought! I never thought that much into it. It's weird how off-brands and name-brands work. Sometimes you will find that a name-brand is more healthy for you than an off-brand. Other times it's the other way around! I would bet that the packaging could have a part in the expenses too!

I think corn is corn. All corn comes out of the ground. I think the only thing that would make it an off brand is cheaper packaging. I prefer off brand actually same thing cheaper price.
